History
In 2019, after seeing so many tethered dogs in underserved communities that needed help; a group of like-minded, dog-loving volunteers came together to form the NC Chapter - Dogs Deserve Better Piedmont. With an initial focus on untethering the many chained dogs in the area, it was evident that the need was much greater. We not only untethered the dogs we met, but we also started helping in other ways. Facilitating spay and neuter, urgent vet care, and improving the lives of dogs in so many other ways. In mid-2024, we shifted from being a chapter, to becoming an independent nonprofit 501(c)3 with our own EIN (99-3535120). This opened opportunities to us that were not available as a chapter which will better help us assist the dogs in Wake, Granville, and surrounding counties. This included setting up our own Board of Directors responsible solely for dogs in this area. Obtaining our own EIN helped us streamline the process for employer matched funds as well as an introduction of vehicle donations, stock donations, estate plans, etc.
Mission
The mission of Dogs Deserve Better Piedmont is to improve the lives of tethered or neglected dogs. We strive to accomplish this through installing large, covered kennels or fences to unchain the dogs. We encourage indoor time, educate communities on animal welfare and care; promote and facilitate spay and neuter, provide urgent veterinary care, and provide needed care and supplies in underserved communities. We work to ensure the lives of the outdoor dogs are just a bit better any way we can.
